After his education, Ajay Singh Bisht moved towards spirituality and became a disciple of Mahant Avaidyanath, the head priest of Gorakhnath Math in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.

In 1994, he was formally initiated as a monk and given the name Yogi Adityanath. Eventually, he succeeded Avaidyanath as the Mahant (head priest) of Gorakhnath Math, which gave him both spiritual authority and a strong social base in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Yogi Adityanath entered politics with the support of the BJP and became one of the youngest members of the 12th Lok Sabha in 1998 at the age of 26, representing Gorakhpur constituency.
